Preserving Irish Traditional Music in Chicago: Francis O'Neill
Tracing the Tunes
Many of the tunes in O’Neill’s collections were named after counties in Ireland or towns therein. On this page you can trace such tunes that come from a selection of these counties. In addition, tunes contributed by some of O’Neill’s collaborators can be heard in their respective counties. Some tracks are played by current-day musicians, while others are recordings made by O’Neill in the early 1900s on wax cylinder. These tracks are Hawk’s Hornpipe, Doctor O’Neill, The Ladies’ Pantalettes, Saddle the Pony, and Banish Misfortune, and they have been kindly made available by the Ward Irish Music Archive, Milwaukee, WI.
