Text
Francis O’Neill
There, all alone in his slumbers
The great Milesian lay
The lion at last is vanquished
By death’s unerring sway
Silent now the tuneful fiddle
The organ’s sad refrain
Sounds in grief for a fallen chief
Through Bantry’s broad domain
Numb is now the gentle finger
That lightly held the bow
And stilled now are the heartbeats
That fed the minstrel’s glow
We shall ask of Music’s goddess
If she would but retain
His spirit as a guiding wand
Through Bantry’s broad domain
Exalted prince of minstrelsy
O’ learned sage profound
Though you have been deigned to leave us
Your genius lingers round
Till some scion who reads your story
In future may proclaim
Your achievements trimmed with glory
Through Bantry’s broad domain
