Shakespeare in Nineteenth-Century Chicago: An Evolving Cultural Identity

Summary

This project looks at the role Shakespeare’s plays have had in shaping cultural entertainment in Chicago over the course of the nineteenth century, noting a shift from “lowbrow” presentations of Shakespeare in rural areas of the country to predominantly “highbrow” productions in Chicago. The project draws on several tools from Northwestern University’s Knight Lab collection of storytelling tools – Timeline JS, StoryMapJS, and Juxtapose, in particular - to present this history from several different perspectives.
