S. M. Bixby & Co.
Title
Description
1865-1920s
Samuel Merrill Bixby began manufacturing and selling shoe blacking in 1860, selling his short-lived shoe store to focus full-time on the venture in 1865. Soon after, S. M. Bixby & Company was formed, producing a wide range of dye-related products, with a concentration on shoe blacking and ink (as the 1919 ad below boasts). Bixby products continued to be sold for several years after the company’s 1920 buy-out by the F.F. Dailey Corporation, but it is unclear when they were finally pulled from the market.
