West Virgina v. Barnette
Description

"There is no doubt that, in connection with the pledges, the flag salute is a form of utterance. Symbolism is a primitive but effective way of communicating ideas. The use of an emblem or flag to symbolize some system, idea, institution, or personality, is a short cut from mind to mind."
The religious organization considered the flag to be an "image," and the act of saluting constituted a type of worship forbidden by their religious beliefs. Children of the religious organization had been expelled from school for failing to salute the American flag. Parents of such children were threatened with prosecutions for causing delinquency. The board asserted that it had the power to impose such a regulation and that it was not unconstitutional. The court held that the flag salute was a form of utterance protected by the First Amendment. The board's actions compelling the flag salute and pledge transcended the constitutional limitations of their power. The board was unable to restrict the religious organization's freedoms as expressed under the First Amendment. The court held that the action of the local authorities in compelling the flag salute and pledge transcended constitutional limitations on their power and invaded the sphere of intellect and spirit which was the purpose of the First Amendment to reserve from all official control.

Whitall, Tatum & Company
Description

1857-1901
Whitall Tatum and Company produced glassware for well over a century, mostly prescription bottles, and was best known for its “flint” (colorless) glass. The company went through a few name changes since its 1806 start as a window glass manufacturer. The most important of which (for our purposes) was their stint as Whitall, Tatum & Co., during which the prescription-style bottle seen below, found at the Charnley-Persky House in 2010, was made; the company used this name from 1857 to 1901. The Whitall and Tatum families were devout Quakers and refused to produce liquor bottles, focusing primarily on druggists’ wares, as seen in the advertisement below.

Description
An account of the resource
Ending his policy of neutrality, President Wilson goes before Congress and asks for a formal war declaration against Germany. Congress passes a war declaration on April 6. The Senate passes the resolution 82-6. The House also does so, 373-50.

Wilson makes his "Peace Without Victory" Speech
Description
An account of the resource
Wilson calls for a negotiated end to the war and speaks of the creation of an international institution to keep the peace. Germany accepts Wilson's terms, but Wilson says Kaiser Wilhelm's endorsement is "empty and insincere." (Quoted in Lynn, Jane Addams, p. 325.) On January 31, Germany declares a return to unrestricted submarine warfare. Several days later, Wilson severs diplomatic ties with Germany.

Description
An account of the resource
After reading of Addams' illness and her treatments in a newspaper, President Wilson sends her flowers and wishes her a speedy recovery in a personal letter. The one dozen American Beauty Roses from the White House Conservatory are sent to the home of Mrs. Joseph T. Bowen where Addams is recovering. Addams sends two of the roses to the Peace Party Headquarters where they are then put on exhibition.
