Gustav Luders (sometimes spelled “Lueders”, 1865–1913) was a minor composer of operettas in the late nineteenth century. Born and trained in Germany, he immigrated first to Milwaukee in 1888 and then became a musical theater director and composer in Chicago the following year. At the time of the Fair, his star was on the rise, and he a number of his operettas appeared on Broadway in the early 1900s before his popularity waned. While this piece was clearly written for piano, the music’s cover announces it was played with “phenomenal success” by the Schiller Theater Orchestra, indicating that this is most likely an arrangement. The music describes a typical journey through the Midway and in some ways anticipates the character of silent movie music written in the 19-teens and 1920s.

By far the most famous product produced by this company was their Hunyadi Janos Mineral Spring Water, named for a 15th-century Hungarian hero; the base of a bottle of this water was found at the Charnley-Persky House in 2015 (see below). First introduced in 1863, The water was advertised extensively as a laxative (as in the 1899 image below). Hunyadi Janos was very popular in the U.S. between 1870 and 1920, and the company disappears from historical record in the 1930s.

1881-1943
Andrew Scherer (pictured below in a 1941 Chicago Tribune article) opened his pharmacy on State and Division in 1886, five years after his first store. The pharmacy served many in the Gold Coast, and a bottle of Scherer’s was found at the Charnley-Persky House in 2010. Scherer’s Pharmacy suffered a massive fire in 1943, and, when Scherer died later that same year, the store was closed. Today, the building houses a CVS.

Description
An account of the resource
An ally of Addams, Lilian Wald, and others associated with the settlement movement in Lower Manhattan, form what, in 1916, would become the American Union Against Militarism (AUAM), which opposes military preparedness by the United States and, unsuccessfully, advocates for a national war referendum. Addams supports the effort. The group opposes conscription once the U.S. enters the war in April of 1917. Many of the leaders of the AUAM later establish the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), of which Addams is a charter member.

<a href="http://www.firstworldwar.com/source/harrachmemoir.htm" target="_blank"><span>Archduke Franz Ferdinand</span></a><span>, the heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his wife Sophie Chotek, are assassinated by Serb nationalist, 19 year-old Gavrilo Princip, an agent of the Serbia-based hypernationalist group the Black Hand. A secret military society, the Black Hand is led by Dragutin Dimitrijević (a.k.a. Apis), a captain in the Serbian army. The assassination is the spark that ingnites the Great War. Germany encourages Austria-Hungary to undertake harsh reprisal against Serbia. Russia commits to the defense of Serbia should Austria-Hungary invade. Germany warns Russia not to intervene once Austria-Hungary invades Serbia, or face war with Germany. France signals its commitment to its ally Russia should Germany attack.</span>
